For a long time, I was constantly creating plans and lists, trying to organize my life and stay on top of everything while perpetually adding in new things. Of course I still plan - I have just gotten better with how I plan, when I plan and what I plan!

Check out these simple tips and strategies, you can use to reduce stress and overwhelm to create a more balanced and joyful life. Put down the caffeine and step away from the calendar - it's time to get funky with the planning!

1. Take a "No"cation: Pep Talk Yourself into Setting Boundaries:

  • Understand your values and priorities: Knowing what's most important to you can help you set clear boundaries. If you value time with family and friends, for example, you might prioritize saying no to work events or commitments that would take away from that time.

  • Practice saying no: Saying no can be uncomfortable, but it's an important skill to develop. Start with small requests and work your way up. Remember that you don't owe anyone an explanation for your decision.

  • Communicate your boundaries clearly: When someone asks you to do something that doesn't align with your boundaries, be clear and direct in your response. Use "I" statements to express your needs and feelings, like "I need some time to myself right now" or "I'm not able to take on any more projects at this time."

  • Set realistic expectations: It's important to set boundaries that are achievable and sustainable. If you're constantly overcommitting yourself, you're more likely to feel overwhelmed and stressed. Be honest with yourself about what you can realistically handle.

  • Celebrate your successes: Setting and maintaining boundaries is a big accomplishment! Take time to recognize and celebrate your successes, even if they're small. It can help you stay motivated and feel proud of yourself.

2. Power Up Your Resources: The Ultimate Recharging Checklist

Jotting down your resources is a crucial part of creating a stress-less action plan. Resources can come in many forms and it's important to identify what helps recharge you. These resources can be social, environmental, or spiritual in nature:

  • Social resources can include family, friends, a supportive community, or a therapist/counselor.

  • Environmental resources can include nature, creating a relaxing atmosphere, or seeking out a specific physical environment.

  • Spiritual resources can include meditation, prayer, or other mindfulness practices.

By identifying and jotting down these resources, you'll have a tangible list of things you can turn to when you're feeling stressed or overwhelmed. This will help you take proactive steps to manage stress before it becomes too much to handle

3. Trigger Warnings: How to Outsmart Your Stress and Keep Your Cool

Knowing what triggers your stress and overwhelm is a crucial step in managing stress and overwhelm effectively. It's important to remember that triggers can be different for everyone, so take the time to reflect on what specifically sets you off. Once you've identified your triggers, you can create a plan to manage them more effectively. For example, if a busy schedule is a trigger for you, you might prioritize scheduling regular breaks and practicing mindfulness throughout the day. If a difficult conversation or conflict tends to set you off, you might plan to take some time for self-care before and after the interaction, such as taking a walk, journaling, or calling a supportive friend. By identifying your triggers and acknowledging one or more when it happens, take a moment to lean on your recharging resources and prioritize self-care.

4. Roll with the Changes: Embracing Flexibility in Your Life

Life is crazy and unpredictable, right? You can plan and organize all you want, but sometimes things just don't go according to plan. And that's okay! It's important to embrace flexibility and adaptability. Being flexible can help reduce stress by allowing you to approach unexpected changes with a more positive and proactive mindset. Rather than feeling overwhelmed and helpless in the face of change, you can view it as an opportunity to problem-solve and find creative solutions. This can also build resilience, as you learn to navigate challenges and overcome obstacles in new and innovative ways. So, embrace the unexpected and use it as an opportunity to grow and thrive!

5. Channel Your Inner Artist: Unconventional Planning Methods for a Happier Life

Planning and organization don't have to be boring or mundane. Inject some fun and creativity into your process by using colorful pens, stickers, or notebooks. You can also experiment with different planning methods, such as bullet journaling or mind mapping, to find what works best for you. Add some fun and creativity to your planning process by personalizing it to your unique style and preferences. This can mean using your favorite quotes or affirmations to motivate you, incorporating fun illustrations or doodles, or even creating a vision board to visually represent your goals and aspirations. Additionally, involving others in your planning process, such as a friend or accountability partner, can make it more enjoyable and even lead to new ideas and perspectives. Planning and organization can be fun, less stressful and even exciting when you find the methods and tools that work for you.

At the end of the day, stress management is a journey, and everyone's path will look a little different. But with the right tools and mindset, it's possible to break free from the cycle of stress and lead a happier, healthier life. By incorporating one of these tips and strategies - or a combination of them - into your daily life, you can reduce stress and overwhelm and create a more balanced and fulfilling life. Remember, it's okay to say no, prioritize self-care, and embrace flexibility and creativity in your planning process.
